What is Caffeine Overdose?

Caffeine overdose occurs when you consume too much caffeine, typically more than 400mg in a day for healthy adults. However, sensitivity varies greatly between individuals based on weight, age, medication use, and other factors.

While fatal caffeine overdoses are rare and usually require extremely high amounts (typically over 10 grams), consuming too much caffeine can still cause uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous symptoms.

If you experience severe symptoms after consuming caffeine, seek medical attention immediately.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and typically appear within minutes to hours of consuming caffeine:

Mild to Moderate Symptoms

  • Restlessness and nervousness
  • Increased heart rate
  • Insomnia or sleep disturbances
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Increased urination

Severe Symptoms

  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • Chest pain
  • Disorientation or confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty breathing

Risk Factors

Some individuals are more susceptible to caffeine overdose and may experience symptoms at lower doses:

  • Children and teenagers - Lower body weight and developing systems
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women - Caffeine crosses the placenta and enters breast milk
  • People with certain health conditions - Heart problems, high blood pressure, anxiety disorders
  • Those taking medications - Some drugs interact with caffeine
  • Individuals with low caffeine tolerance - Due to genetics or infrequent consumption

When to Seek Medical Attention

Seek immediate medical help if you experience:

  • Chest pain
  • Irregular or racing heartbeat that won't slow down
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Confusion or hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Severe vomiting or abdominal pain
Emergency: If you suspect someone is experiencing a severe caffeine overdose, call emergency services immediately.

Prevention and Treatment

Prevention

  • Know your sensitivity level and safe limits
  • Track caffeine consumption from all sources
  • Read labels - many products contain caffeine
  • Reduce intake gradually if you're used to high amounts
  • Stay hydrated with water

Treatment

For mild symptoms:

  • Stop consuming caffeine immediately
  • Drink water to help your body process the caffeine
  • Try to relax and rest
  • Wait for the effects to wear off (caffeine's half-life is about 5-6 hours)
