200 mg, matching the category standard

NoDoz Maximum Strength carries 200 mg of caffeine per caplet, according to its drug label. That’s the same strength as a generic caffeine tablet and Vivarin, so switching between the three common over-the-counter stay-awake products doesn’t change the dose. One caplet is roughly two 8 oz cups of drip coffee at USDA’s reference strength (95 mg each), taken in a single swallow rather than sipped over time.

The NoDoz label is slightly more conservative than some of its peers on dosing: it allows half to one caplet no more often than every 3 to 4 hours, where some competing labels default straight to a full caplet. Splitting a caplet is one way to take a smaller dose, 100 mg, closer to a single strong cup of coffee.

A pill hits differently than a drink

A cup of coffee paces itself out over the time it takes to drink; a caplet delivers its full 200 mg at once. Two caplets reach 400 mg, the entire daily figure the FDA cites for healthy adults, and a single caplet alone already exceeds the 200 mg EFSA assessed as a safe single dose for healthy adults.

Using it without sliding into dependence

NoDoz and similar caffeine pills are marketed for staying awake, which makes them easy to reach for repeatedly when sleep is short rather than as an occasional boost. That pattern builds tolerance the same way a rising coffee habit does, and the FDA notes that stopping caffeine after regular use isn’t dangerous but can bring on withdrawal symptoms like headache and fatigue, best managed by cutting back gradually rather than all at once. The label itself warns not to use the product as a substitute for sleep and to get medical help right away in case of overdose. Counting a NoDoz caplet alongside a day’s coffee and soda matters more than counting any one of them alone: a caplet and a single Grande Starbucks Cold Brew already total 405 mg.
