Blended, not brewed
A Coffee Frappuccino is a blended ice drink made with coffee, milk and ice. It is sweeter and creamier than an iced coffee, but the caffeine is lower because the drink is built from a coffee base rather than full-strength brewed coffee. Starbucks lists 65 mg in a Tall (12 fl oz), 95 mg in a Grande (16 fl oz) and 125 mg in a Venti (24 fl oz).
A Grande Coffee Frappuccino at 95 mg has about two-thirds the caffeine of a Grande Caffè Latte at 150 mg. The blended format and added ice dilute the coffee, so the drink feels larger but delivers less caffeine.
Watch the add-ons
Creme-based Frappuccinos contain little or no caffeine, but the Coffee Frappuccino uses a coffee base that contributes the 95 mg in a Grande. Espresso shots can be added on request, each adding 75 mg. Whipped cream, syrups and drizzles do not change the caffeine number unless espresso is added.
The 95 mg in a Grande is below the 200 mg single-dose threshold EFSA notes can affect sleep in some adults, but a late-day Grande still contributes to your daily total. For a lower-caffeine treat, the Coffee Frappuccino is a smaller dose than most espresso-based drinks.
Size versus caffeine
The Venti (24 fl oz) Coffee Frappuccino has only 125 mg of caffeine, about 30% more than the Grande despite being 50% larger. The extra volume is mostly ice, milk and syrup. If you want a big, cold drink without a big caffeine hit, the Coffee Frappuccino is a better choice than an Iced Coffee or Iced Latte of the same size.
