A little more, thanks to the chocolate
The Mocha Frappuccino carries 70 mg of caffeine in a Tall, 100 mg in a Grande, and 130 mg in a Venti, a touch above the plain Coffee Frappuccino (65, 95 and 125 mg) and the Caramel Frappuccino (60, 90 and 120 mg) at the same sizes. The pattern mirrors Starbucks’ hot drinks, where a Caffè Mocha also runs higher than a same-size latte, because the mocha sauce itself carries a little caffeine on top of the coffee base.
Still far below an espresso drink
Despite the extra mocha caffeine, a Grande Mocha Frappuccino’s 100 mg remains well under a Grande Caffè Latte (150 mg), since Frappuccinos are blended with a coffee base rather than pulled as espresso shots.
Blended coffee, not brewed coffee
A Frappuccino’s coffee base is a pre-made concentrate blended with ice, milk and syrup, rather than freshly brewed coffee poured over ice, which is part of why its caffeine per ounce runs lower than a straightforward iced coffee or cold brew of the same size. The mocha flavouring narrows that gap slightly compared to the plain Coffee Frappuccino, but doesn’t close it.
Where it fits in a day
At 100 mg, a Grande is well under the 200 mg single dose EFSA assessed as safe for healthy adults. Four Grandes, 400 mg, would reach the daily figure the FDA cites for healthy adults. In pregnancy, where ACOG uses a 200 mg daily ceiling, two Grandes use the whole day’s allowance.
