200 mg in a soda-sized can

Alani Nu Energy is sold in 12 oz cans that look and drink like a soda but contain 200 mg of caffeine. That is the same caffeine as two small cups of brewed coffee in a volume that can be consumed in a few minutes. The small volume makes it easy to drink quickly, so the caffeine hits faster than it would from a larger, slower-to-drink coffee.

The manufacturer lists 200 mg per can across its flavours. Because the caffeine is added rather than brewed, the dose is consistent from can to can. A single can is already half of the 400 mg daily reference the FDA cites for healthy adults and matches the 200 mg ceiling ACOG recommends during pregnancy.

Comparing to other energy drinks

At 200 mg in 12 oz, Alani Nu is stronger per ounce than Red Bull (80 mg in 8.4 oz) and close to Celsius Original (200 mg in 12 oz). It is lower in caffeine than Celsius Essentials and Monster Energy, but the smaller can means it is still a concentrated dose.

If you are using energy drinks before exercise, 200 mg is within the 3–6 mg/kg range for many adults. If you are using it as an afternoon pick-me-up, the caffeine can still be present at bedtime because caffeine’s half-life averages about five hours with a wide individual range.
